What's Around? 5 Things That Should Be Nearby Your New Home

Don’t Settle for the Middle of Nowhere

It’s exciting to move into a new home! The possibilities seem endless as you arrange your furniture and build a new life, but once the dust has settled, it’s time to take stock of just what’s around you. Are you close to any supermarkets? Do your kids have to schlep a mile just to get to school? Before you even think about taking the keys from your realtor, let’s dive into a few amenities every homeowner needs.

1. Grocery Stores

You won’t get very far without a grocery store. Sure, some people like to stock up at Costco, but plenty of other people enjoy fresh meat and vegetables. You also never know when a storm will strike (or the holidays will sneak up on you), so it’s always a good idea to live closer to one.

2. Hospitals

No one wants to get caught in an emergency in the middle of nowhere. You not only have to worry about long response times, but you also have to worry about navigation should anything happen in the middle of the night. ER wait times are no picnic, but it’s better than not having them at all.

3. Schools

Even if you don’t have any kids—or plan on having them—it’s always smart to live near a school. It drives up property value and makes your home a lot more desirable to young couples and parents. It also guarantees a lot of foot traffic on Halloween!

4. Community Centers

Community areas can mean anything from recreational parks to post office buildings. You never know what will come in handy, and it’s nice to know that an affordable gym is right around the corner.

5. Loved Ones

It’s not always easy to stick by loved ones, but unless you’re moving across the country, you should try to have a friendly face nearby. Now, we’re not saying you should live next door to your family, but that sense of community and familiarity is more important than you think.
