5 Signs You've Hired A Bad Real Estate Agent

Do They Have Your Best Interests at Heart?

We put a lot of trust in real estate agents, whether we realize it or not. We’re not only trusting them with a slice of the pie, but we’re also entrusting them to find us the best spot we can comfortably afford—and not every agent is out to help you. Let’s explore a few telltale signs that it might be time to shop around for more reputable realtors.

1. Poor Communication

Your agent should be in constant communication with you. How far along is the deal? Did anyone accept your offer? Are there any stipulations to your demands? If your agent doesn’t keep you informed, it’s hard to believe they care as much as they should.

2. They Don’t Listen

You told your agent that you wanted a house with four bedrooms, but they found you one with two. You wanted a finished basement, but they recommended a fixer-upper. Real estate agents should adhere to their clients’ wishes, and if they can’t find what you’re looking for, it’s probably time to cut them loose.

3. No Market Knowledge

Realtors do a lot more than house hunt; they also carry insider knowledge that scores you the best price for your home. At least, that’s the dream. Some agents, however, lack that know-how, either pricing your home too high (which leads to no offers) or lowballing you (which hurts your wallet).

4. They Hide Stuff From You

It’s not up to your real estate agent to decide what you should and shouldn’t know. Their job is to keep you informed. Even if they think they’re “protecting” you, withholding information is incredibly shady.

5. Unprofessional Behavior

Does your agent show up on time? Do they remember details? Do they find homes within your budget or make little jokes about your chosen neighborhoods? Believe it or not, realtors can be pretty unprofessional, and the second you feel uncomfortable is when you should jump ship.
